Latest reports suggest that Chelsea are set to make Jordan Pickford their topmost priority if Thibaut Courtois goes on to join Real Madrid in the current transfer period. Though, Everton are likely to stand firm on their stance of not selling the 24-year-old. The English goalkeeper’s stock has risen through the roof especially after a superb performance in the World Cup for his country.
There were some doubters of the Everton goalkeeper and many were of the opinion that Jack Butland or even Nick Pope could have been a better option, however, the custodian has proved his naysayers wrong and it is likely that he has cemented England’s no. 1 spot for the coming years.
Everton paid £30m to acquire his services last season and it is certain that in the given market situation he is going to fetch more than that. Though the Merseyside club shouldn’t even remotely think of selling him as he is likely to play a big part in their upcoming season. The Toffees are looking for a new beginning under Marco Silva and they will be expected to play a more attacking brand of football under the Portuguese manager.
Pickford has everything to his game which a modern-day goalkeeper needs as he is calm and composed to play out of the back and his shot stopping skills are top notch. Many were of the opinion that the Merseyside club overpaid to acquire his services last summer but no one will be complaining about that anymore.
The goalkeeper came into the limelight in his latter days with Sunderland where he was a massive wall for them at the back. He had gone on to represent England at various youth levels and it wouldn’t come as a surprise to many that he went on to become England’s no. 1.
The custodian managed to keep 12 clean sheets in 46 appearances last season and with a better defence in front of him, the number could have easily been higher. The Englishman is also a good reader of the game as he often comes out his line to clear the danger for his side. He is likely to be a crucial player in Silva’s setup as he will want his goalkeeper to have good distribution capabilities.
A move to Chelsea could be tempting for the player as they will have a better chance to challenge for big trophies. However, Everton should definitely close all doors on this move.
