Former Cardiff City midfielder Aron Gunnarsson’s contract expired over the weekend and the Iceland international is currently a free agent. The 29-year-old midfielder has been part of the Bluebirds since 2011, playing an important part for them in the middle of the park over the past few years.
It seems like Neil Warnock wants to build his team for the Premier League without him and that will come as a body blow for the player. However, the Icelandic international has been solid in the middle of the park for his club and country over the years and it is likely that some Championship or even Premier League clubs might make a move for him.
Gunnarsson is a central midfielder but can play in a more defensive role as well. He is strong on the ball and is often difficult to dispossess. His defensive work rate is also top notch. He can still be a valuable addition for plenty of teams, especially in the Championship, as he has gotten a lot of experience from playing over 300 games in the second tier of English football. He was used rather sporadically by Neil Warnock as he made just 20 appearances during the last campaign.
With the Iceland captain being a free agent, we look at three clubs who can go after him in the summer.
The Villans are going through a financial crisis and it is likely that they will have to part ways with quite a few players to generate funds. Signing an experienced campaigner like Gunnarsson will certainly bring a lot of stability and strength to their midfield. With the likes of Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak on the wrong side of their thirties, the Iceland international could be a good replacement for either of the two.
Wolverhampton Wanderers
The newly promoted Wolves will be aware that the English top flight won’t be a cakewalk like last season in the Championship and they will have to make some smart additions to their squad so that they can stand in good stead in the Premier League. It is still not clear whether the West Midlands outfit will go for Alfred N’diaye on a permanent basis as the Senegalese played a crucial part in Nuno Santo’s side last season. Gunnarsson can certainly be a viable option to start alongside Ruben Neves in the middle of the park.

The Canaries were in the Premier League not so long ago, however, they have fallen down the pecking order quite fast. They finished 14th last term and could certainly do with a strong and physical option in midfield like Gunnarsson. The best part about the deal will be that he is available for free.
