After a less than impressive campaign in the English top flight under three different managers last season, Everton are now a club desperate to compete for top honours in England. They have assigned the responsibility to take the club forward to Portuguese tactician Marco Silva, who is now busy trying to trim the squad to his liking.
He is expected to make a fair number of signings before the start of the new campaign but is also in need of selling players who do not fit into his system next season. One such player, who has now left for the Bundesliga club Werder Bremen, is Dutch star, Davy Klaassen.
Having started his senior career with Ajax, Klaassen made 126 league appearances for the Dutch giants in his six seasons with the senior side, where he registered 55 goals in all competitions. He also has 31 Europa League and 11 Champions League appearances, along with 16 caps for his national side and was expected to be a match winner for Everton, when he joined the club just last summer under Ronald Koeman.
However, neither Koeman nor Sam Allardyce were impressed with what he had on offer and Klaassen only managed three league starts all season. He made no impact, whatsoever, on the score sheet and struggled to establish himself in the first team, even when given a chance. At 25, he will want to play regularly and Everton were in no position to stick with him and wait for him to find some form.
So it does not come as a surprise that they have already offloaded him, just a year after signing him. Klaassen cost Everton £23.6m last summer but reports now suggest that German outfit Werder Bremen have prised him away on a £12m deal.
Bremen registered their interest in the player a week ago and Klaassen, who missed Everton’s friendly encounter against Blackburn Rovers, had his medical in Germany before signing for the Bundesliga outfit. So should Everton have given him another chance?
The 25-year old has undoubted potential and is a genuine match winner on his day. He is versatile, can play in several roles and could have been a utility man for Silva next season but Klaassen did not seem to fancy the pace and the physical demands of the Premier League last season.

He is a gifted footballer but is not an irreplaceable one and if Silva believes that he will play no role in the first team at Goodison Park next season, this move to Bremen is in the best interest of all involved.
