Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the race to sign one of European football’s hottest property, Sergej Milinkovic Savic, from Lazio. The Serbian international did give a good account of himself in the World Cup as well for his national side. The midfielder was constantly being linked with the Red Devils, however, those rumours have died down of late and Chelsea have been linked with a move to sign the 23-year-old midfielder.
Last season, he made 48 appearances in all competitions and managed a healthy return of 14 goals and 9 assists. Given the fact that he is a central midfielder, those are certainly some impressive numbers. The Blues have officially parted ways with Antonio Conte and a lot will be expected out of Maurizio Sarri in the upcoming season.
Chelsea have officially signed Jorginho from Napoli and a few more business can be exected by the Pensioners in the transfer market. The West London club did go on to win the FA Cup in the last campaign but the season overall can be classified as a failure as they missed out on a top-four spot.
We have seen luring players with just Europa League qualification is often tough given the fact that other competitors can offer the player a chance in Champions League. So Chelsea’s task will be cut out if they want to sign Milinkovic Savic.
The Blues are in desperate need of midfield cover as their new signing Tiémoué Bakayoko failed to get going in his first season. The likes of Cesc Fabregas and Danny Drinkwater have also struggled at Stamford bridge so the club is in desperate need of a midfielder.
Ngolo Kante is a nailed on starter and is likely to be partnered by Jorginho. Lazio, on the other hand, are set to demand £115m for their star midfielder so it will be interesting to see whether the Blues will pay such an amount for the Serbian international.
The Blues have other areas as well to look after so it will be foolish from Chelsea’s point of view to bust up over 100m for one midfielder. It is expected that star players like Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard will leave the club in the summer so they will have to look for replacements for them. Having already signed Jorginho, the move for the Serbian looks highly unlikely at this point in time.
