According to recent reports, Celtic are eyeing up a move for Swansea City’s Jordan Ayew. The Championship outfit are expected to sell both Jordan Ayew and Andre Ayew off this very summer following their relegation from the Premier League. While Turkish club, Besiktas are keen on offering a loan payment and taking the player’s wages off the Swans’ books, Brendan Rodgers potentially might be looking to make a swoop.
However, with Jordan Ayew’s value close to the £8m mark, is it even realistic for the Hoops to chase such high profile targets? Rodgers have already broken the Celtic bank for the signing of Odsonne Edouard from Paris Saint-Germain. He also has the likes of Mousa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths vying for a place up top at Celtic Park.
Unless Dembele exits Parkhead this summer for a monstrous fee, it just seems unnecessary for the Hoops to go after another attacker. However, it will be foolish to completely discount the attacker’s footballing abilities. There are no doubts over the talents of the 26-year-old and of what he brings to the table. Jordan Ayew, who is the junior of the two brothers, led the Swans in scoring with 11 goals to his name last term in 44 all around appearances. He set up 4 more assists to help the club push for survival late into the 2017/18 campaign.
Unfortunately, Carlos Carvalhal could not get past Southampton in the 37th game week and that sealed their demotion to the Championship. Ayew is at the peak of his footballing career and might just be far too good for the second division. He is versatile with his positioning and can appear from the flanks as well. The Ghanaian attacker now has 80 games worth of Premier League experience during which he has racked up 15 goals.
He also has 46 caps for the Ghana national team with 12 international goals registered to his name. Ayew could find himself in a highly lucrative spot with Celtic since they have lost Patrick Roberts and Charly Musonda this very summer.
Rodgers currently has Lewis Morgan, Scott Sinclair, James Forrest, Jonny Hayes and Ryan Christie in the flank positions. Ayew will be a guaranteed update with more scoring strengths attached to his game. The 26-year-old is fast on the break and has the technical abilities to beat defenders on the dribble. He is particularly explosive inside the opposition box which he got to notice last season.
However, since making a name for himself in the English top-flight, it is unlikely that Celtic will able to beat out the competition for Jordan or be able to afford his wages.
