Aston Villa are weighing up an offer for former Ipswich Town forward David McGoldrick this summer. According to recent reports, the Villans are interested in securing the signature of the Republic of Ireland international during this summer transfer window. The 30-year-old is currently a free agent and has gathered a lot of interest from a whole host of English clubs which include Bristol City and West Bromwich Albion.
The Irishman kicked off his career with Notts County as a 16-year-old before making a switch to Southampton for an undisclosed fee. He made a return back to the Magpies on loan later on and subsequently had spells with Bournemouth, where he netted six times in 12 games, and Port Vale, where he scored twice in 17 matches in League One.
McGoldrick managed to break into the Saints first-team in the following season, where he found the back of the net 12 times in 46 matches but could not save Southampton from getting relegated which led to him departing in a £1m move to Nottingham Forest.
However, the Irish talent had to endure a difficult time at Forest, where he scored three times in 33 games on his debut campaign and five in 21 in his second. McGoldrick spent part of 2011/12 on loan at Sheffield Wednesday before flourishing the following season at Coventry City, netting 16 goals in 22 matches.
He moved to Ipswich Town in the winter of 2013 where he scored 14 goals in 31 matches in his first full season at Portman Road. However, his form dipped during the following years and he was finally released at the start of this month.
His goal-scoring record is average, to say the least, which is why Villa should only look to recruit him to boost their squad and not expect to play him in Steve Bruce’s first-team week in week out.
The addition of McGoldrick will definitely bolster Bruce’s attacking options at Villa Park. The Villans have players such as Jonathan Kodjia, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy and Scott Hogan vying for a place in Bruce’s starting XI. The potential acquisition of McGoldrick will undoubtedly improve their squad depth and add more competition for places within the Villa team.

At 30, he still has a few years left in him to play at a high level which the Villans could look to benefit from, in the next few years. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of McGoldrick and whether he ends up plying his trade at Villa Park next season.
