Arsenal are bound to be discouraged by the latest proceedings of the Cristian Pavon transfer saga. The winger has agreed to a new contract extension with Boca Juniors which is inclusive of a £37.5m release clause. This is bound to throw potential suitors off the race for his signature since he is clearly unproven in the European top-flight.
Speaking to the press about Arsenal’s transfer plans, Unai Emery said, “We signed the players who we needed and only if one player is a big opportunity for us will we sign them. At the moment, I think the squad is complete. We will only sign another player if there is an opportunity to bring in that one player, or two players. We will only sign a player in the next month if he’s a big opportunity.”
The newly appointed Spanish boss has already brought in 5 new players to the Emirates, spending around £75m in the process. A winger is a necessary addition with Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott, all quitting the North London outfit last season.
Cristian Pavon has long been scouted as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez on the left wing along with Mexican international, Hirving Lozano. The former did get the nod ahead of Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala for Argentina in the 2018 FIFA World Cup but did not particularly impress as his country got knocked out of the tournament in the first knockout stage.
However, his exploits for Boca Juniors in the Argentinian top-flight is what earned him a spot in the final 23-man squad in the first place and drew interests from elite European outfits. He can appear from either of the wings and even in the lone striker role. The 22-year-old scored 7 goals and set up 19 assists in 32 appearances for Boca last season.
There will be a slight sense of scepticism among the Arsenal faithful over the final prospects of Cristian Pavon in the Premier League. After all, we have seen many a talented South Americans make their way over the Atlantic only to fail at the grand stage.

With no immediate competition in the wing position, Pavon can be called upon to be an immediate hit at the Emirates. However, the real question lies in whether he is worth the obscene amount of cash his current club values him at. Maybe Emery is better off chasing other targets, such as Gelson Martins or PSV Eindhoven’s Lozano.
