In all fairness, Andre Gomes’ switch from Valencia to Barcelona bore little fruit for the Portuguese central midfielder. Rated highly within the Spanish game, Gomes’ arrival at Barcelona failed to live up to the expectations that it generated.
He spent the majority of his Barcelona days sitting on the bench and his contributions towards the team did little to enhance his reputation. It was always going to be a difficult task for him to replace the likes of Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitic on the field. Furthermore replacing Sergio Busquets was never on the cards.
Understandably, the lack of game time started to take its toll on the Portuguese International and he was eventually voted as the worst signing of the season by readers of Marca. A mere 46 appearances since joining the Catalonia based club, can be viewed as a wakeup call and that perhaps it’s time for Andre Gomes to bid adieu to the Spanish Giants.
The English powerhouse Arsenal are now looking to galvanize Andre Gomes’ capabilities, the very same with which the player used to impress viewers from around the world. Having already captured the likes of Sokratis from Borussia Dortmund and Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus, new manager Unai Emery is making smart yet bold signings to strengthen the squad passed down to him by Arsene Wenger.
The addition of Andre Gomes would surely beef up a midfield which has already lost Jack Wilshere. Gomes would do well to team up with Ozil, Ramsey and Xhaka and would bring a lot of pace into the team. At the same time, his passing range would suit the way Arsenal are traditionally known to play. Physicality is something he would look to improve on as the English game demands a lot from its players.
Unai Emery’s style of management is one that would benefit the Portuguese ace, who does have a burst of pace in his locker and he would do well to make proper use of his height and long strides.
It will be interesting to see what Emery and the Gunners have in store for their supporters and the Premier League for the upcoming season. They will be expected to challenge for a top 4 spot and maybe even push for the crown. We can expect a new look Arsenal to leave its roots behind, along with the departure of Wenger, and play a brand of football that will be expected to draw respect from their Premier League rivals.
