Arsenal‘s versatile defender Calum Chambers has signed a new long-term deal with the club. The player revealed the news on his official Twitter account and looked delighted by the fact that he is set to stay at the Emirates for some more years. Unai Emery would have certainly been impressed with the 23-year-old Englishman’s talents and now he has rewarded him with a new contract.
Chambers will have to fight for a place in the starting lineup in the upcoming season as the Gunners have gone on to sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos who is likely to partner Laurent Koscielny at the back.
The Petersfield born defender has graduated from Southampton‘s academy before going on to join Arsenal in 2014. Ever since then, he has been fighting for his place in the starting eleven. Before the start of the upcoming season, he will hope to impress the Spanish tactician in the preseason training and competitions.
On the new deal, Emery said,” I’m delighted Calum has extended his stay with us. He played an important role last season and will be part of my plans this season.” The defender had made 25 appearances in all competitions and will be hoping to play a much bigger role in the upcoming season.
Chambers has represented England at various youth levels plus he has even gone to represent the Three Lions’ senior side three times so far. However, he has fallen slightly down the pecking order since the emergence of John Stones and Harry Maguire in the England squad. The Gunners starlet will be looking to establish himself in the England squad over the next few years.
For that to happen, he needs to play regularly for his club and it remains to be seen how much he will be involved in the Arsenal first-team in the upcoming season. The centre-back has often been used as a right back and his versatility will certainly come in handy for Unai Emery.
Chambers has huge potential to be a regular at the Emirates in the future. Maybe this year will be a real breakthrough year for him whe he will establish himself as the first choice option at Emery’s backline. He has all the qualities of a modern-day central defender and is a tireless worker who reads the game well, which has enabled him to play in multiple positions at the back.

Maybe with regular playing opportunities, he can realise his true potential and the signing of a new contract at the club shows that the board and the manager has faith in the Englishman’s abilities.
