Lucas Torreira is now officially a Gunner! Arsenal and Sampdoria were successful in their negotiations which saw the Uruguayan join the North London side. The finer details of the deal are yet to be announced by both the clubs, however.
Sampdoria Club President took to social media to thank the midfielder for his contributions in Italy towards the services for the club using Twitter and also announce the imminent departure of the defensive midfielder. He had made 71 appearances in his three-year stint with La Samp, in which he spent one season on loan at Pescara. The Uruguayan midfielder found the back of the net 4 times in a Sampdoria jersey.
With the departure of Jack Wilshere on a free transfer to West Ham United, Mesut Ozil took over the number 10 shirt freeing up space for the number 11 to be represented to Torreira. The young midfielder had done enough to impress current Arsenal boss Unai Emery of his capabilities during his spell in Italy and again with his dominating displays during Uruguay’s failed attempt to win the World Cup in Russia.
Torreira is quick to sniff out threats in the middle of the pitch and his fine sense of positioning enables the defensive midfielder to regain possession for his team. His arrival at Arsenal will see Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny contend for a place alongside the Uruguayan at the heart of midfield. Despite his stature, Torreira makes his presence known with commanding displays as he fights for every loose ball and makes a bold habit of nicking the ball off the opposition.
His style of play is something Arsenal have lacked in recent times, as Xhaka failed to live up to the expectations which were placed on the Swiss International. Torreira is fierce when squaring up against an opponent and puts in tremendous work rate, all in favour of his team. His competitive nature will help him ease into the style of play the Premier League is known for.
Emery was quick to praise his new recruit stating, “In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game. A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup. He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing.”

Torreira remains calm as he now looks to settle into the lifestyle that London has to offer. The Uruguayan midfield warrior is the battery Arsenal require in order to get the Gunners all charged up before the start of the new season.
