Manchester United are being linked with a number of defenders over the past few weeks as their search for a new centre-back moves on. It is believed that Jose Mourinho is on the lookout for a new defender this summer and have set his sights on a few candidates to boost his squad ahead of the new campaign in the top tier of English football.
According to recent reports, the Red Devils are currently the favourites to land Leicester City defender Harry Maguire this summer. The Foxes star had put in some outstanding displays at the King Power Stadium during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed by United, who are eager to snap him up in the coming weeks. He was also impressive for the English national team and helped his country progress into the semi-finals of the competition where they were eventually beaten by Croatia.
The English prospect is young, has incredible potential and is exactly what Mourinho is looking for out of a defender, in this transfer market. However, the lack of European experience will be a cause for concern against such a move. Having said that, he is exactly the kind of talent who can flourish under Mourinho’s guidance if given the honour of plying his trade at Old Trafford next season.
The Red Devils has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur‘s Toby Alderweireld this summer but a move has failed to materialize so far. He could be relatively cheaper than the other defensive options who are currently available in the market. The Belgian is extremely talented and has a wealth of experience at the top level. Barring his injury concerns, he is a top-class centre-back and will add a lot of solidity and leadership to the United backline.
The Manchester outfit has also been touted to make a move for AC Milan’s Leonardo Bonucci. The Italian is another experienced candidate to take up the defensive duties at Old Trafford. However, the fact that he is unproven in the English top-flight and doesn’t have age on his side will be a concern against such a move for the Reds of Manchester.

Maguire is clearly the youngest among the three options that Mourinho is reportedly considering. He is also English which is a bonus but Alderweireld has the quality and experience to improve the United backline significantly and help them challenge for the league title. Hence, Mourinho should do everything in his power to land the Belgian international before the start of the new season.
