Rangers FC defender, Bruno Alves had travelled to Italy to undergo his medical with Parma after agreeing to a one-year deal. It might be time for the Gers faithful to say goodbye to their veteran centre-back who only served a single season at the Ibrox. The 36-year-old was brought in last summer by Graeme Murty but could not really impact the team with his recurring injury concerns.
Alves did get to make 25 appearances this past season, often selected over the likes of Ross McCrorie and Fabio Cardoso in the centre-back role, when healthy. The veteran was brought in to add experience and leadership to club’s backline.
Unfortunately for the Portuguese international, his years might just have gotten the better of him at the Scottish Premiership and his starting spot has been stolen away by new signings, Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic. Steven Gerrard’s first point of business was to address the club’s defence and he did that by making two young centre-back additions. He also brought in the experienced Allan McGregor on a free transfer to solidify the goalkeeping position.
Alves is not short of top-flight experience or is necessarily the one to heap all the blame for Rangers’ past season woes. The 96-cap Portuguese international is just at the twilight of his playing career and is not the best fit with the Glasgow-based outfit. He used to be a highly rated figure in the FC Porto ranks and even had spells in some of the most prestigious leagues in Europe with Zenit St Petersburg and Fenerbahce S.K.
Losing Alves might not be that big of a headache since a lot of younger and abler replacements have already been signed by the Light Blues. Gerrard has taken over the reigns at the Ibrox and ideally would like to work with players more suited to his style of play.
The former England boss has a magnanimous task on his hands at reigniting the supporters’ spirit for the club’s future exploits. The Gers fans were left humiliated by their bitter rivals, Celtic when they were handed a 5-0 thrashing in the deciding game of the 2017/18 Scottish Premiership season.
The loss came after the previous 4-0 defeat in the Scottish Cup semi-finals. Prior to that, Brendan Rodgers’ men had already stolen bragging rights after beating Rangers 2-3 in their own turf.

Now, the club has found ways to match the talents of the dominating Celtic squad and somehow find a way to get out of their shadow in the domestic stage.
