Latest reports claim that Gary Cahill might be considering a Chelsea departure along with teammates, Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois. While the latter duo has spoken explicitly of their uncertain futures at the Stamford Bridge, Cahill’s position is under threat over the possible arrival of Daniele Rugani from Juventus. Cahill made 24 starts in the Premier League last term and was dropped in crucial games by Antonio Conte. Now, the Blues have done away with the Italian head coach and signed Maurizio Sarri as his replacement.
Cahill wants assurances that he will be offered more first-team involvement in the upcoming season. The Englishman openly expressed his disappointment over getting benched behind Antonio Rudiger last season. He said, “It’s been tough. It has been hard having to sit out massive games, watching us fall by the wayside and not being able to have a huge impact on that. People can argue that as captain you can still have an impact in the dressing room, but it’s difficult when you’re not playing in those big games.”
At 32, Cahill has looked a bit off the pace in the last campagin, often making silly errors and failing to meet the necessary standards. Since the departure of John Terry, Cahill has struggled to bring around the same level of impact and leadership as his former centre-back partner. It is understandably hard to digest that younger players such as Andreas Christiansen and Antonio Rudiger will get the nod ahead of you but Cahill has to own up to his shortcomings as well.
Not only are the youngsters faster and more agile on the pitch, they also bring around different elements that Cahill is not capable off. Rudiger acted as one of the prime defensive pillars but also played a key part in launching the team’s attacks.
At this point, it might be hard for Cahill to adopt new measures and he is sure to find it increasingly hard if Rugani makes his way over to the Bridge. Nevertheless, the Chelsea faithful doesn’t have much to complain about as the 32-year-old did deliver consistently for six long years.

He was brought in from Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2012 and was later handed over the captain’s armband for a reason. He also earned a spot in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Chelsea should respect the player’s wishes and can also recoup a tiny bit of their summer expenditures on his sale.
