The arrival of Steven Gerrard at Ibrox has certainly given the club a huge boost, going into their 8th season without any success in conquering the Scottish league title. The former Champions League winner with Liverpool has been a busy man since landing the job in Glasgow, adding a number of fresh faces to their squad this summer.
He is also quick to get rid of fringe players, who do not fit into his system, trying to reduce wage burdens at the club. One such player, whose future is now in doubt is Eduardo Herrera.
A signing made by Pedro Caixinha, who was then in charge of the club, Herrera scored two goals in his first five outings for his side, making an immediate impact on the squad. However, the goals seemed to have dried up, as the whole system looked out of shape, pushing the Gers down the league points table.
Caixinha got the sack soon, leaving Herrera completely out in the dark. He played just 14 minutes after the turn of the year, losing the faith of Graeme Murty. He is also not expected to play a huge role under Steven Gerrard, with the manager happy for him to quit the club this summer.
Various reports claim that he is wanted back in his homeland, Mexico, with clubs like Toluca and Pumas, the latter being his former club. He is 29 and will be desperate for a regular game time but it is now revealed that Herrera has stalled on any offers from Mexico.
An exclusive from Express claims that the striker wants to continue his career in Europe and is happy to stay and fight for his place at Ibrox. He is also open to a lean deal, so what should Gerrard do with him?
The 38-year old has only added one attacking options to his squad this summer in Jamie Murphy, but it is understood that Umar Sadiq is closing in on a loan move to Ibrox this summer, pending a work permit. The AS Roma man will be expected to add some goals but it is likely that Alfredo Morelos will continue to lead the attack for Gerrard’s Rangers.
Herrera was the first choice backup for Morelos and could stay that way next season as well, with Kenny Miller joining Livingston FC as a player-manager. Sadiq is relatively inexperienced and will take his time to settle in, so the experience of the Mexican international will be of great use for Gerrard.
He may not be a regular starter, but will certainly have a chance to make an impact next season. So it makes sense for the Gers to hold on to him for another season unless they are able to find an upgrade on him on the cheap.
