Rangers forward Eduardo Herrera has left the club on a season-long loan deal this summer. According to recent reports, the Gers striker has returned to his homeland after completing a 12-month loan switch to Santos Laguna during this summer transfer period.
The Mexican had previously played for Laguna on loan when Pedro Caixinha was in charge of the Mexican club, who also have a partnership arrangement with the Light Blues’ nearest rivals, Celtic. The 29-year-old frontman had failed to live up to the high expectations at the Ibrox Stadium and has barely featured for the Teddy Bears during the course of the last campaign.
The Mexican forward joined Caixinha’s Rangers team last summer but only found the back of the net twice in 24 matches. He had been sidelined by new boss Steven Gerrard during pre-season which has paved the way for his switch to Santos.
Herrera has earned nine international caps for the Mexican national team and has got three goals to his name for his country. The forward will definitely benefit from playing regular football back in a familiar surrounding which could help him reignite his career and come back to the Ibrox stronger than ever next year.
The Gers have managed to start their new season off with a victory in Europe but Gerrard will be aware that he needs to bring in some more quality in the coming weeks if his players are to compete on all fronts in the upcoming campaign.
The departure of Herrera won’t have an effect on Gerrard’s first-team going into the new season as the Light Blues try to bridge the gap between themselves and the Hoops in the next few years. The English manager can use the cap space generated by the departure of the 29-year-old frontman to strengthen other areas of his squad.

It will also benefit the player to return to his homeland and gain some much needed first-team experience next term. Herrera had featured in 24 games for Rangers last season, scoring two goals and providing one assist in all competitions. At 29, he still has a few good years left in him which Santos could look to benefit from, in the coming season. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Herrera and whether his time in Mexico turns out to be fruitful.
