The sheer brilliance of Chris Wood in front of goal almost earned Leeds United a playoff spot under Garry Monk in their eventful 2016-17 season, but the surprise step down of the Swansea City great and Wood’s transfer to Premier League boys Burnley came as a big blow in West Yorkshire as the Whites, who suffered years of anguish in the second tier, failed to keep up the good work at Elland Road and returned to a midtable Championship place following a couple of unsuccessful spells under Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom last season.
The appointment of iconic manager Marcelo Bielsa as the new Leeds boss is indeed a huge move from owner Andrea Radrizzani’s part, however, the former Argentina and Chile chief needs tools to reconstruct the depleted side and script their long-awaited return to Premier League football where they once used to dominate as an admirable English force.
The signings of Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Caleb Ekuban last summer as their new striking options did not work out at all and wide attacker Kemar Roofe was seen featuring in a make-shift centre-forward role at some stage of the previous term.
Leeds, understandably, are after a prolific goal-scorer and the rumours linking them with Matej Vydra and Abel Hernandez hit the headlines frequently. Vydra, the Derby County forward, will cost a few million whereas the latter was available on a Bosman move upon his contract expiration at Hull City.
But the recent reports are suggesting Turkish side Bursaspor’s interest in Hernandez, the Uruguayan international, who missed out the majority of the previous term through injury but still returned 8 goals in 10 outings for the Tigers.
The Green Crocodiles finished 13th last season in Super Lig and a goal drought has triggered them to chase several prolific signings. They are also after Sporting Lisbon midfield attacker Bryan Ruiz and Besiktas striker Vagner Love alongside the Championship hitman, thus, the Peacocks must make a swift move for the in-demand forward if he is viewed as an attacking option under Bielsa next season.

Hernandez had his fitness concerns, yet he will be a shrewd business for the promotion aspirers who are likely to receive a £20m transfer warchest as claimed by several outlets. They need proper investment high up the pitch and a proven name available for free should be grabbed at any cost considering their current circumstances. Leeds, therefore, must make a move at the earliest and tie down the 27-year-old making him an integral part of Bielsa’s revolution.
