Southampton midfielder Jordie Clasie has left the club on a loan deal and have joined Feyenoord this summer. According to recent reports, the Dutch talent has completed a season-long loan move to the De Kuip during this summer transfer period. The Saints midfielder seals a return to Feyenoord, a club he previously played for between 2010-2015, before making a switch to the St. Mary’s Stadium in the summer of 2015.
The 27-year-old signed for the South-coast club on a five-year contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £8m. Clasie had featured in 49 matches for the club and scored twice during his time in English football. He was also part of the Saints team who made it through to the League Cup final in 2017. However, the player went out on loan in Belgium to ply his trade for Club Brugge, helping them secure the Belgian top-flight title last season.
The Dutch international is the 13th member of the Southampton squad to have departed the club this summer as their manager Mark Hughes looks to revamp a squad that narrowly managed to avoid the drop from the English top tier last season.
It was recently revealed by Hughes that the South-coast outfit needs to sell players before they can look to make any new acquisitions this summer.
Southampton needs to make some smart additions in the coming weeks if they are to compete for their top-flight lives and improve on their league performance next term. Retaining some of their top players could help them challenge on all fronts in the upcoming campaign.
However, Clasie is clearly a player who is not on Mark Hughes’ plans for the new season. Hence, a move away from the St. Mary’s Stadium could benefit all parties. The Dutch sensation can play regular football with Feyenoord in the hopes of reigniting his career while the Saints can get the player off their wage bill as they look to recruit other potential transfer targets in this post-season.

Clasie had made 161 appearances in the Dutch top tier, scoring 10 goals while grabbing 27 assists. He has also earned 17 international caps for the Dutch national team during his career so far. He can definitely be an ideal asset for Feyenoord and could come back as a stronger player next year. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Clasie and whether his loan spell at the De Kuip turns out to be a success.
