Southampton are inching closer towards sealing a move for Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard this summer. According to recent reports, the Saints are closing in on the Danish centre-back with a medical due on the South-coast this week.
It is believed that a whole host of English top-flight clubs were looking to snap up the Bundesliga defender. Some sources are now claiming that the Saints have won the race to secure his services this summer after agreeing on a fee with Monchengladbach.
The 25-year-old can be considered as one of the best centre-backs in German football. Vestergaard had put in a number of solid performances for the Bundesliga side during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed by other clubs.
The Danish talent had made 34 appearances for the Borussia-Park outfit last season and has three goals to his name in all competitions. He is exactly the kind of defender who can benefit the Saints in the new campaign as they look to stay away from the relegation zone at all costs.
The South-coast outfit were able to avoid the drop by the skin of their teeth in the last campaign which indicates that their manager Mark Hughes needs to rebuild his squad this summer and add some quality players like Vestergaard who can help them compete with the big boys of the league in the upcoming season.
The addition of Vestergaard will definitely bolster Hughes’ defensive options at the St. Mary’s Stadium. Southampton have the likes of Maya Yoshida, Jan Bednarek, Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt competing for a place in their first XI. The potential acquisition of Vestergaard will undoubtedly improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the Saints squad.
