Sporting Cp winger Gelson Martins is all set to terminate his contract with the Portuguese club following an altercation with the club’s supporters ahead of a cup final appearance last season. According to recent reports, the Portuguese international’s agent has confirmed that the player won’t move to Benfica but is on the verge of terminating his contract with the Lisbon outfit.
Martins had put in a number of outstanding performances during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed by other clubs. Some sources are now claiming that he could soon become a free agent which will be a big boost for any of his potential suitors. One of the clubs being linked with the Portuguese speedster is Liverpool who are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
The 23-year-old had made 52 appearances for Sporting last season, scoring 13 goals while creating 13 assists across all competitions. He is exactly the kind of talent who can thrive under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield if the Reds can lure him to Merseyside this summer.
Martins was a part of the Portuguese national side which participated in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. However, they were recently eliminated by Uruguay in the knockout phases of the competition which means that the player’s future will be sorted soon.
The Reds of Merseyside managed to clinch a 4th placed finish in the league last season. Jurgen Klopp is now looking to snap up some top-class talents this summer so that his team can challenge for major silverware once again in the upcoming campaign.
The addition of Martins will definitely bolster Klopp’s attacking options ahead of the new season. Liverpool have some quality wingers in their ranks such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who are all competing for a place in the Reds’ first-team. The potential acquisition of Martins will undoubtedly improve their squad depth significantly and add more competition for places within Klopp’s team.
