Wolves are lining up a move for Valencia right-back João Cancelo this summer. According to recent reports, the West Midlands side are ready to fight for the signature of the Portuguese international during this ongoing transfer period. The Premier League new boys are ready to strengthen their options ahead of the new season and Cancelo fits the bill perfectly.
The Portuguese defender signed for Valencia from Benfica in the summer of 2015 and has gone on to play in 74 La Liga matches so far in his career. He went out on loan to Inter Milan last summer and put in a number of terrific displays for the Italian giants during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed. Some sources are now claiming that Nuno Espirito Santo’s team are keen on bringing him to the Molineaux Stadium in this post-season to help them compete in the English top-flight next term.
However, they are not the only ones looking to recruit the Portuguese talent with Manchester City already tabling a reported €45m (£39m) bid for his signature. Cancelo had made 29 appearances for the San Siro-based side last season, scoring one goal while grabbing 4 assists across all competitions. He has also earned 6 international caps for the Portuguese national team and has three international goals to his name so far.
Wolves managed to win the Championship title last season and will now look to turn their attention to the English top tier. Their main focus will be to avoid relegation at all costs when they embark upon their Premier League journey later this year. Santo needs to make some clever acquisitions this summer if his side are to perform well in the upcoming season.
The addition of Cancelo will definitely bolster Santo’s defensive options ahead of the new season. Wolves have full-backs such as Matt Doherty, Barry Douglas and Ryan Bennett competing for a place in their first XI. The potential acquisition of Cancelo will undoubtedly improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within Santo’s squad.
