Wolves are reportedly interested in signing Valencia full-back Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese defender was out on loan in Italy playing for Inter Milan until May this year and may now be available for a transfer to England.
Manchester United were also interested in landing Cancelo but having announced the signing of another Portuguese full back in Diogo Dalot yesterday, it is unlikely that United will want to add Cancelo as well. This will greatly boost the morale for Wolverhampton Wanderers who are also interested in securing the signature of the player.
Cancelo is reportedly available in the market for a fee of £35m. Wolves might also be rivalled by Italy’s league champions Juventus, who have been tracking the progress of the defender. The Portuguese defender is only 24 years old and is versatile enough to play on either flank depending on his team’s requirements.
He is fast and extremely athletic and can be an asset to any team in defence as well as attack. He loves to go on the overlap and deliver dangerous crosses for his team. He is also a goal threat from outside the box and has scored quite a few long rangers in his career. He is good with the ball at his feet and is more suited to play as a wing-back rather than a fullback.
It was believed that the defender would be staying back in Italy as Inter Milan were expected to make his loan deal permanent for a recorded fee of £30million but Luciano Spalletti failed to see through the deal as the club were held back by Financial Fair Play restrictions.
It is now being believed that Wolves, who gained promotion to the Premier League this season after winning the Sky Bet Championship, will be in pole position to land the young defender. Owned by Fosun International, Wolves have been heavily investing in the transfer market since last year and multiple Portuguese players have walked into the club under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.
Wolves are expected to make a £35million bid for the player after holding talks with Valencia and Cancelo could become a Wolves player this summer. The defender is slightly weaker on the defensive aspect of his game and hence a team like Wolves would ideally suit him where Santo deploys a three-man back system.

This would allow Cancelo to operate as a wing-back and bomb forward every now and then and make the Wolves attack one of the most vicious ones in the Premier League next term.
