Watford have seemed to clinch the deal for the signature of Bologna defender Adam Masina and according to reports, the Italian will be coming to England for a medical this week. The former u21 Italian international was entering in the last year of his contract and the Italian outfit decided to sell the defender to Watford instead of losing him for free next year. Bologna finished 15th in Serie A and Masina was a regular feature for them in the left back department.
The Hornets will be looking to add more quality at the back as they were defensively poor in the season just gone by. Javi Garcia’s men finished 14thon the table after a good start to their season under Marco Silva. Watford claimed that Everton tried to snap up their manager by making an illegal approach towards him and since then their season went downhill.
At one point in time, it looked that they will comfortably finish in the top half of the table. But later on, it seemed like they might be even dragged in a relegation battle.
Hornets conceded 64 goals in the league last season and one expected better out of them on the defensive front. They were playing free-flowing football in the first half of the season but they were let down by their defence.
The signing of Masina will certainly boost their options at the back. The 24-year-old is known for his energy and pace down the left and will provide a cutting edge while moving forward as well. He is decent at the back but he can still work on his defensive abilities. The fullback can even play in a more advanced role as well down the left and his versatility will certainly be useful for his manager.

It remains to be seen whether he will be able to adjust his game to the dynamics of English football. He is just 24 but has a good amount of experience in Serie A as he broke into Bologna’s team when he was just 19. He is highly regarded in Italy and was even linked with a move for Italian heavyweights like Napoli and Roma but it seems like the English club has gone on to win his signature. Garcia has the likes of Marvin Zeegelaar and Jose Holebas for the left-back role and it remains to be seen whether Masina will play down the left or further up the pitch in a left midfield or a winger’s role.
