Watford will be looking to improve on the 14th place finish last term and they are already on the move in the transfer market this summer, to bring in reinforcements. They have secured the signings of Gerard Deulofeu, Adam Masina and now are being linked to Burnley‘s Sam Vokes as there are currently doubts about club captain Troy Deeney’s future at Vicarage Road.
Vokes managed just four goals in the last campaign in 32 appearances but his price will certainly be appealing for the Hornets as he will be entering in the final year of his contract. Vokes is 28 so he surely won’t be a long-term option for them. However, the Welsh footballer has been around the blocks for quite some time now and could be a decent fit for them.
Burnley might be looking for an upgrade as they have qualified for the Europa League next season and that could mean the end of the road for Vokes at Turf Moor. The forward has been with the Clarets since 2012 when they were a Championship outfit and has played a decent role for them over the years in their rise in English football. The 28-year-old has made 239 appearances for them and has scored 60 goals.
However, the move is only likely to go through if Watford part ways with Troy Deeney. The veteran striker had a disappointing season as he managed just five goals in the Premier League in 29 appearances. Reports suggest that Javi Gracia will be willing to listen to offers worth around the £10m mark and it remains to be seen whether the 334 games-veteran will leave the club in the summer.
In an interview, Deeney claimed that he doesn’t have any intention of leaving the club but if the right time comes, he will have no qualms about parting ways.
Deeney’s stock has gone down in the last few seasons but he still remains an important member of the Hornets squad. Apart from the Englishman, Stefano Okaka and Andre Gray are other two viable options which Javi Garcia has at his disposal.

The move basically comes down as a toss-up between Deeney and Vokes and sticking with Deeney will likely be a much better option. One cannot really say that Vokes will be a substantial upgrade over Deeney, however, the Hornets can make some profit by selling Deeney and getting Vokes for a much lesser amount and that could be tempting a tempting proposition for the club.
