After suffering successive relegations, Sunderland will be looking forward to bouncing back in the Championship in the upcoming season and to achieve that, they have handed the baton to Jack Ross. The gaffer has started to rebuild the squad and they have acquired the signature of Chris Maguire. The winger was signed from Bury FC on a two-year deal and he was considered as a leading target of the manager.
The Scotsman has been around for quite a while now and he has plenty of experience in League One. He started his career with Scottish outfit Aberdeen. He has been a known name in the lower division of English football and the 29-year-old will be a crucial player for the Black Cats in the upcoming season.
The manager seemed delighted with his new acquisition. He said,” Chris was desperate to come here, and he will tell you this is the biggest club he’s played for. But he’s got a bit about him and as soon as he saw the stadium he said, ‘I’ll have a bit of this’. He comes with a belief in his own abilities but a desire to make the most of this opportunity, so I’m pleased he’s aboard because he has proven quality.”
The fee paid by Black Cats is not revealed, however, it won’t be much as Bury themselves got relegated to League Two. He had a below par season with them the last term as he managed 2 goals in 29 appearances in all competitions. He struggled with a bit of form and fitness last season but could be a valuable addition to his side as he has plenty of experience.
He has represented the likes of Derby County, Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry, Rotherham and Oxford and that is one of the reasons why Ross has gone after Maguire as he knows about the League One well and the manager will be aware what he can offer. His best season came with Oxford United in the 2016-17 campaign where he scored 17 goals and provided 12 assists.

Maybe under Jack Ross, he can repeat his form from that season as Sunderland look to bring in more attacking talents for the upcoming season. He is prone to injuries so that could be one of his drawbacks, however, when fit and available, he is creative and plays with a whole lot of intensity which makes a huge difference for his side. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to replicate his form of Oxford United days at the Stadium of Light.
