Southampton‘s manager Mark Hughes is looking to reunite with his former player Geoff Cameron. Cameron had played under Hughes when he was the boss at Stoke City and it seems that the veteran American can be handed a way back to the Premier League. The Saints themselves were in the relegation battle until the end and they just managed to survive by finishing 17th.
Cameron is one of the longest-serving players at Bet 365 stadium currently as only Peter Crouch and Ryan Shawcross have been at the club longer than him. The American has been at the club since 2012 and has racked up 186 appearances for the Potters. He has been a crucial player for them in the last few years, however, last season under Paul Lambert, he failed to get regular playing time as Badou Ndiaye was preferred over him in midfield who joined the club in the January transfer window.
It is believed that the new manager Gary Rowett is keen to bring the average age of the side down and that could mean that the veteran could be shown the door in the summer. The midfielder extended his contract last year only and is set to stay at the club until 2020.
Last season he made just 21 appearances in all competitions and it seems like the new manager might also prefer a younger option over him in midfield. However, Ndiaye has been subject to a bid by Wolverhampton Wanderers and it remains to be seen whether Ndiaye will stick around at the Bet 365 Stadium.
The likes of Oriol Romeu and Mario Lemina were usually used in the defensive midfield role by the Saints but both of them had a below-par season, to say the least. Cameron is a veteran of the English Premier League and he will certainly add more competitions for places. Hughes has worked with him from close quarters for close to four years and the English manager will know what he is going to get by signing Cameron.

The Saints are currently in need of creative and attacking output as they struggled to score goals last season, however, they still need to cover some of their bases at the back and Cameron will be a good squad player to have. His versatility is going to be another asset as he can fill in various positions like centre back and right back as well.
