Southampton are eager to secure the signature of FC Basel wide man Mohamed Elyounoussi this summer. According to recent reports, the Saints are ready to step up their interest and beat Leicester City in pursuit of the Norwegian winger’s signature during this summer transfer period. Mark Hughes’ side has been previously linked with a move for the Basel star but a move has failed to materialise so far.
The 23-year-old had put in a number of outstanding displays for the Swiss giants during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed by other clubs. Some sources are now claiming that the South-coast club are desperate to seal a move for the Norwegian international in this post-season. It has also been suggested that the Saints are ready to finalise a £16m deal to try and bring the Al-Hocelma born winger to the St. Mary’s Stadium.
Elyounoussi had featured in 44 matches for Basel last season, scoring 13 goals while grabbing 17 assists in all competitions. He is exactly the kind of talent who can help the Saints avoid relegation next season. The Norwegian has a knack for scoring and creating goals at important moments which will definitely strengthen Hughes’ squad.
The South-coast club managed to save their top-flight lives by the skin of the teeth towards the end of the previous campaign. The Southampton supporters will now be hoping that their team can move on and recruit well this summer so that they can improve on their domestic performance next term.
The addition of Elyounoussi will undoubtedly bolster Hughes’ attacking options ahead of the new season. The Saints have an array of attacking talents such as Dusan Tadic, Sofiane Boufal, Mario Lemina, Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse vying for a place in Hughes’ midfield. The potential acquisition of Elyounoussi will definitely improve the Southampton team and add more competition for places within Hughes’ squad.

At 23, the Norwegian international still has his best years ahead of him which the Saints could look to utilise in the next few years. The Basel star is also quite versatile and primarily operates in the number 10 position but can also play on the left flank which makes him a perfect fit for the South-coast club. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Elyounoussi and whether he ends up making a switch to the St. Mary’s Stadium in the summer.
