Latest reports claim that Steven Gerrard is looking to sign Jason Cummings to Rangers this summer but cannot agree upon a price with Nottingham Forest. The Championship outfit reportedly is holding out for a £1m fee but could be swayed over the statements of the player himself.
After a successful loan spell at Ibrox and with absolutely no prospects of senior team involvement under Aitor Karanka, Cummings stated that he wished to sign with the Gers on a permanent basis. The Light Blues director of football, Mark Allen was earlier quoted, “I’m confident Jamie will become a Rangers player, but we’re not quite there yet. With Jason there is dialogue, but it’s early.”
Cummings scored 10 goals and a single assist in his 35 appearances last term. After a torrid 6-month spell in the first half of the season, he was called up by Graeme Murty in January for a short loan. The Scotsman was already a huge fan of the Premiership outfit, Hearts and was a part of the club’s youth academy. Unfortunately, he could not cut it for the senior team and was later released by the club in 2013.
He managed a prominent role in the Hibernian first team and went on to make 149 appearances for the club, scoring a remarkable 71 times and setting up 23 assists. His impressive display while playing for the Cabbage is what got him the £1m call-up from Nottingham last summer.
When asked about Cummings, former Hibs boss, Alan Stubbs had said, “It’s the most difficult thing you can teach someone, but it comes naturally to Jason. We worked on other parts of his game that we felt he could improve on, like his movement and his awareness around the penalty box.”
Both Hutchison Vale and Hibernian was rewarded by the Scotland national side for his development and Cummings was later rewarded with 2 caps for his country, making his debut against the Netherlands in November 2017.
Rangers are on an ambitious path of toppling the Celtic dominance in the Scottish top-flight. That would require the allocation of talented young players and Cummings fits the bill perfectly.
Gerrard is looking for an additional number nine who will able to either pair up with Alfredo Morelos up front or serve as a rotational option. The 38-year-old boss has already parted ways with Kenny Miller and has asked Eduardo Herrera to find himself a new club.
