Steven Gerrard took over as Rangers FC boss last Friday on an official basis. The former Liverpool legend was appointed as head coach last month itself but his regime began as of last week. Gerrard, who has only managed the Liverpool youth side before, has zero experience of managing a senior team and hence this job might prove to be an opportunity that came too early for his good.
The Anfield legend will be charged with the task of reinstating Rangers as a Scottish powerhouse next to Celtic, who have dominated the domestic circuit in the recent years. The Hoops recently won their second consecutive domestic treble and Rangers have been left barren after yet another trophy-less season.
Rangers will be hoping to see Gerrard bring in some much-needed competitiveness from his playing days into the team and manage to inspire the Gers to do better this season. The first thing the former England international has to do would be to chop and change the squad at the club. Rangers fans will be hoping that Gerrard will be able to use his ties with the Kops to bring in some players from Anfield to bolster the Gers squad.
One such player who can definitely improve the Rangers team will be Liverpool youngster Dominic Solanke. The 20-year-old striker and Chelsea academy graduate moved to Anfield last year in search of some much needed first team game time. However, the brilliance of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino has meant that Solanke has been unable to break into the first team.
The youngster, however, appears to have taken it on the chin and is keen to learn from the famous trio. He said: “Everyone knows how much of a big club Liverpool is. I’ve enjoyed my first season. It’s gone in quickly and we have such a good bunch of boys. The front three are phenomenal with the stats they have got this season. We are so lucky to have them and for me to watch them every week and learn from them definitely helps my game.”
As for Rangers, Solanke has expressed his interest in watching how Stevie G manages to inspire the Gers. He said, “Gerrard’s a legend. He has done so much for Liverpool and for football. I’m happy he has got the Rangers job and it will be good for him. I’m intrigued to see how he’s going to do.”
Although no possible move has been reported of, Gerrard could look to make a bid for the youngster and bring him in on a loan deal. Rangers recently parted ways with their club legend Kenny Miller and with the forward now no longer a viable option, the Gers could look to bring in Solanke.

A young striker, with good physical abilities and excellent ball control, Solanke can develop his game at Rangers. He has the necessary skills to be an excellent number nine and has a keen eye for goal as well. Let’s hope Gerrard uses his connection with Liverpool to mastermind a loan deal for young Solanke, who can learn a lot from playing under Gerrard.
