Kilmarnock starman and veteran midfielder, Youssouf Mulumbu is reportedly set to depart for Premier League football this very summer. The 31-year-old has not confirmed a target destination yet but is holding negotiations with two English outfits. This should prompt Steven Gerrard and the rest of the Rangers FC management to offer the player a lucrative contract of their own.
Mulumbu was being targeted by the Gers as well along with a host of other Scottish Premiership outfits. Preliminary talks did not begin ahead of this summer as the player was still in his 6-month long contract with Killie.
During his time at East Ayrshire, Mulumbu managed to spice up the Scottish top-flight with his brilliant set of feet and intelligent creative abilities. The DR Congo international reunited with his former boss, Steve Clarke to set up 4 assists in 20 games for Killie last season.
Mulumbu was released by Norwich City in November and the player managed to prove to everyone his real worth. The midfielder even scored the winner against the champions Celtic in the 1-0 February win at Rugby Park.
In relation to trade rumours surrounding Mulumbu, Clarke came out and said, “I wouldn’t say I was overconfident of keeping Youssouf. He came up here to put himself back in the shop window and I think he’s done that with his performances.”
“That’s been great for Youssouf and it’s been great for Kilmarnock. I said to the supporters that they just had to enjoy him while he was here. And I imagine a bigger club will come in for Youssouf in the summer as he’s a free transfer. If that happens, we wish him well.”
Mulumbu boasts of top-pedigree talent, having spent 5 years with Paris Saint-Germain and subsequently 6 years with West Bromwich Albion. The 5 feet 10-inch man was brought out of the Parisians academy where he featured in 22 games for the senior team.
He was primarily loaned out to the Baggies in 2009 for a short while and later made his commitment permanent after impressing in the first 6 months. Mulumbu made over 200 appearances for Albion and 24 in total for Norwich City.
He has the talent and the experience to leave a major mark on the Rangers team. The veteran could be the missing component to drive that midfield while also leading a relatively young group of players to the league title next term.
Mulumbu hasn’t put pen to paper just yet with any English outfit and Gerrard should leverage every waking minute to convince the midfielder.
