It is pretty clear that Abel Hernandez is set to depart from the KCOM stadium after a four-year spell with Hull City and Leeds United are considered as front-runners to sign the Uruguayan striker. However, if the latest reports are to be believed, Newcastle United have entered the fray to sign the striker.
Hernandez announced his exit on social media platform Twitter. He said, “I’m writing to say THANK YOU to all the fans of Hull for these 4 beautiful years “I will never forget the matches in which you singed [sic] my name, this is something that I will have forever in my heart. You never stopped showing me your great support and affection, and I am deeply grateful. This is why you deserve to know, directly from me, that my time at Hull is now over, everything comes to an end and today I have to say goodbye.”
The Magpies finished 10th in the 2017-18 campaign and will be looking to consolidate from here onwards. Not many gave them the chance to be anywhere near the top half of the table but Rafael Benitez’s men certainly punched above their weight. However, they have lacked in the attacking department and should be looking to add reinforcements in the summer.
There is a scramble among Championship clubs to sign the striker but when the big boys from Premier League start showing their interest in Hernandez, there could only be one winner. Newcastle will be hoping that they can have their man as the likes of Dwight Gayle and Joselu have struggled to get going in front of goal.
The 27-year old’s last campaign was plagued with injuries and he managed to make just 10 appearances in the Championship. But Hernandez managed to show his class in that short period as he scored 8 goals and provided 2 assists.

Benitez found success in the latter half of the last season when he partnered up Dwight Gayle with Ayoze Perez and it is expected that he will use the formula of 2 strikers up front in the next season as well. Hernandez has the ability to play as a secondary striker as well as an out and out centre-forward. He even has an experience of playing in the Premier League and the fact that he is a free agent currently, Newcastle should certainly sign him up soon for next season to beef up their offence.
