Newcastle United are looking to boost their strike force for the upcoming season as they continue to climb up the ladder in English football. They are being linked with a move for Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon. The West Bromwich Albion striker managed 10 goals last season as the Baggies got relegated and he might be looking for a way out of the club to continue playing in the English top division.
According to reports, Rafael Benitez is looking for a strong target man and Rondon fits the bill perfectly for him. He is being rated at £16m and it remains to be seen whether the Magpies will pay that kind of sum for a 28-year-old striker.
West Bromwich Albion had a poor season as they finished bottom of the table in the top flight and now they might have to sell some of their players as they will not get the financial benefits of playing in the Premier League anymore. Rondon is a traditional no 9 who can hold off the ball and he is physically strong. His aerial abilities are top notch and will certainly be a good addition at St.James’ Park.
There are other clubs as well who are vying for the Venezuelan’s signature and Newcastle will need to be quick in their pursuit if they want to get their man. Tottenham Hotspur have shown interest in the striker and he can be lured to the North London club as they can offer him Champions League football. However, he is likely to be a backup option to Harry Kane and he will spend most of his time on the bench if he makes the switch to Tottenham.
Newcastle United failed to find the back of the net regularly as the likes of Dwight Gayle and Joselu had a poor season. They got some success when Benitez partnered up Gayle with Ayoze Perez and it is likely that he will use two strikers upfront next season and that is where a signing like Rondon can come in handy as he can be the target man and someone like Perez.

It remains to be seen what amount of transfer kitty the Magpies will get for the summer. Mike Ashley and Rafael Benitez’s relationship have been strained over the years regarding the mismatch in their ambition for the club. Rondon will be a good option as he has a good amount of experience in the Premier League. However, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to pick up his game from last season as he struggled at the Hawthorns.
