Reports continue to link Newcastle United with a move for Swansea City striker, Jordan Ayew. Rafael Benitez have been looking for a new striker since the start of the year but could only manage a loan deal for Leicester City’s Islam Slimani last season.
Now, the Magpies boss has a real shot at bolstering the attack with a prolific number nine and who better to approach than a relegated outfit who can barely afford to pay their high profile names. The Swans might be in a difficult spot following their relegation from the Premier League.
Some of their biggest names include Ayew and his transfer will give them a more flexible wage structure to fit in cheaper replacements. Graham Potter has taken charge of the Welsh outfit and is already looking to bring in Saman Ghoddos from Ostersunds FK.
Ayew, 26, was one of the best players for the Welsh outfit last term and led the scoring with 11 goals in 44 appearances. He also made 4 assists to give the Swans a little bit of fight late into the campaign.
Unfortunately, Carlos Carvalhal could not get past Southampton in the 37th game week and that sealed their demotion to the Championship. Ayew is at the peak of his footballing career and might just be far too good for the second division.
He is versatile in the final third and a terrific athlete. The Ghanaian attacker now has 80 games worth of Premier League experience during which he has racked up 15 goals. Newcastle could use a prolific talent like him in the squad to improve upon their 10th place finish from last season.
It was almost a miracle to see the team finish so high up in the table at the break of the new year. Benitez had no financial backing from Mike Ashley and potentially had exhausted all his club players.
Somehow, the Spanish boss revamped the side with new energy and managed to pull off enough points to beat out half of the league. Now, he will require a backup option to Dwight Gayle who disappointed the last term with just 5 goals.
Ayoze Perez filled in from the shadow striker role but otherwise, United were starved of a scoring option. Ayew has developed himself into a top striker after spending time with Aston Villa and Swansea in the last 3 seasons.
