Manchester United are reportedly eager to send Scott McTominay out on loan next season with Celtic emerging as the heavy favourites. The Hoops could offer the 21-year-old more first-team involvement than Jose Mourinho can at Old Trafford. Brendan Rodgers is looking to make improvements to the squad and the Red Devils holding midfielder could be a brilliant short-term acquisition.
McTominay broke into the scene last season when he got selected into the United starting XI over Paul Pogba. The football world went berserk to see the most expensive Premier League player get benched behind a 21-year-old academy product.
Jose Mourinho felt the team could use some change and decided to give the Lancaster-born player a shot. McTominay took to the challenge with a lot of enthusiasm and ended up impressing his manager and the fans.
He held his discipline in midfield and worked in perfect unison with Nemanja Matic to see out his team’s results. The 21-year-old is still a bit raw on the offensive end of the pitch but nothing regular first-team football cannot fix.
With a quality touch on the ball and the clear mind to operate from tight spots, there is a lot of promise under the McTominay’s boots. Brendan Rodgers could field him either in Scott Brown’s spot or next to him at Parkhead.
The United faithful must be overjoyed to see another one of the club’s academy graduates doing so well upon selection. Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard has already gone to bigger things with the English national side and is currently representing his country in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
McTominay chose to play for Scotland despite being born in England. He has earned 2 caps till date for Alex McLeish’s side. The youngster’s contract is due to run for another 3 seasons with an included option of a 12-month extension.
United can afford to send the player out now that they have signed Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk. With Pogba, Matic and Ander Herrera in the squad, Mourinho should be looking towards making improvements to other positions.
The Portuguese boss still has to deliver silverware in the coming season after finishing 19 points behind rivals, Manchester City in the last one. Pep Guardiola’s men absolutely dominated the domestic stage and made a semifinal run in the UEFA Champions League, whereas the Red Devils dropped out in the first knockout stages.
