Manchester United have spent on a number of star players recently but in the last few years, their most consistent performer has been their shot-stopper. David de Gea, Iker Casillas’ replacement for the Spanish national side, has slowly established himself as one of the best, if not the best goalkeeper in the game at the moment.
The Madrid born superstar moved to England for the first time in 2011 and despite having a nervous debut season, did not take long to establish himself as the first choice at the club. He has made a minimum of 34 league appearances in five of the seven seasons he has been at Old Trafford and has hardly put a foot wrong in the last few years.
Back in 2015, Real Madrid were interested in taking him back to his hometown and De Gea naturally wanted to leave. But technical issues allowed Manchester United to retain him beyond the transfer window, and they acted swiftly to tie him down to a new deal.
He has only improved since that point and has won 7-10 points for his side every season. However, Real Madrid’s interest never faded away and with Zinedine Zidane now out of the club, Florentino Perez is back to try and lure the Spaniard.
Jose Mourinho will still be confident of keeping him in Manchester but latest comments from the 27-year old have put his United future in doubt. When asked about Real Madrid’s interest in his services, De Gea said that it was important for him to concentrate on the World Cup right now.
However, he did not rule out a move to the Spanish capital saying, Football is football and a thousand things can happen. But I’m always calm. Come what may, I’ll be the same. It is important to be focused and be 100%.” So can the Red Devils afford to lose him?
At 27, he is potentially the best keeper for years to come in Europe and is the biggest asset at the moment at Old Trafford. He is a genuine match winner and his consistency makes him that much more impressive. He has rarely dipped in form, and though has had nervous moments, usually stands up when needed.
He will fetch insane numbers for United, who can spend big on a replacement, but there are very few players in the transfer market that can replicate De Gea’s stint in England.

United are looking at Jan Oblak, who probably is the best alternative to De Gea, but they should do all it takes to keep the former Atletico Madrid man from returning to his homeland.
