All doesn’t seem to be over for Luke Shaw at Manchester United as latest reports suggest that the fullback can be offered a new contract at the club. The English defender who joined from Southampton has failed to establish himself under Jose Mourinho and the player has had quite a few runs in with the manager in the past season. Everyone expected that this summer will be the final nail in the coffin for Shaw’s career at Old Trafford, however, there seems to be a glimmer of hope that he can still go on to establish himself with the Red Devils.
Shaw is set to enter the final year of his contract and it was largely expected that United will look in for a more viable option to provide strength in the left back spot. They were constantly linked with a move for Juventus defender Alex Sandro but they have been put off by the price of the Brazilian defender.
The 27-year-old is being valued at €60m and it seems like the Red Devils don’t want to pay that much for the defender. They are also being linked with a move for Danny Rose and Kieran Tierney but it is still not clear which option they will go for in the summer transfer window.
Mourinho singled out Luke Shaw for criticism after one of the games where he was substituted at halftime and that had left the 22-year-old defender miffed. Mourinho had said,”Luke in the first half – every time they come in his corridor, the cross was coming and a dangerous situation was coming so I was not happy with his performance.”
Such public criticism would have left any player disappointed and it was very much expected that Shaw will depart from the club in the summer. However, it seems like United have realised that the 22-year-old has still got a lot to offer at the club and are willing to offer him a new contract.

Mourinho had used Ashley Young for the most part of last season as a left-back and it would have been frustrating for Shaw to see himself being replaced by a player who is not even a left back in the first place. Shaw had made just 11 appearances in the Premier League last term and he needs to be playing more regularly if he wants to improve his game. The reports suggest that there is some reluctance in his camp regarding the new contract. However, the move can be a good one as Shaw is still just 22 and can go on to become a future star in English football.
