Manchester United had a poor season according to their standards as they ended up trophyless and finished 19 points behind their rivals Manchester City in the League. Their playing style has been panned by pundits and fans alike and the pressure will be on Jose Mourinho to deliver the goods in the upcoming season.
The Red Devils are currently being linked with a move for Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant. The 35-year-old has been around the blocks for quite a while now and it seems like Mourinho is looking to bring in a backup goalkeeper to David De Gea and Sergio Romero. Their current third-choice goalkeeper Joel Pereira is 21 and it is likely that United will send him on loan in the transfer market to gain some valuable experience.
There have been rumours that Romero might look to leave Manchester United as he wants more first team action so maybe Grant might very well end up as the second choice stopper for United side next season. The veteran made just 5 appearances last season as Jack Butland is the no.1 choice starter at Stoke City. However, there is a high chance that Butland will part ways with the Potters after the World cup ends and that will probably make Grant as the first choice custodian at the Bet 365 Stadium.
The 35-year-old will have a decision to make whether to be with the Potters as he is going to have more of a chance to make appearances there, especially now that they have gone down to the Championship. At United, he will be quite far from first team action, however, getting an experience to play at one of the biggest clubs of the world will be tough to turn down.
De Gea has been fantastic for the Reds even though there has been constant speculation of him leaving England. However, latest reports suggest that the Spaniard will sign a new contract at the club and that certainly closes the door for most of the goalkeepers around the world to make an appearance at Old Trafford, let alone Lee Grant.
Grant has been used as a cover-up for Jack Butland when he was out for a long term due to injury and the Englishman did go on to impress in games when he started. Maybe now that there is a chance that Butland might leave in the summer, he can stick with them as a no 1 choice started instead of moving to United just to make up the squad numbers.
