Manchester United are being linked with RCD Mallorca’ right-back Joan Sastre who helped his side gain qualification to the Spanish second division by winning the Segunda B. The former La Liga outfit has fallen further and further down the domestic tables in Spain but last season was certainly one to rejoice, as they won the title with relative comfort.
Joan Sastre was a regular feature for them down the right side of defence as he racked up 36 appearances in all competitions. He managed three goals and was one of the standout players for his side last season. The 21-year-old is a product of Mallorca’s academy and has slowly graduated to the first team in the last few years.
Last season was a breakthrough season for him as he slowly established himself as a first-team regular after Vicente Moreno promoted him from Mallorca B side. The 21-year-old is also a former Spain U-19 international.
Manchester United will look to mount a better challenge on all fronts in the upcoming season as Jose Mourinho went trophyless. Their style of play and his tactics have been uninspiring and there is a certain section of fans who are losing patience with the ‘Special One’.
It is certain that the Red Devils will not sit tight in the transfer market and they will look to add reinforcements to their side this summer. They will also like to replace their ageing defence. United have been strong defensively but that has largely been down to the fact that they have defended in numbers and more so because of their outstanding custodian in David De Gea.
Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian are the current right-back options which Mourinho possess and it seems certain that Darmian’s time at Old Trafford is about to come to an end. The Italian was brought in with a lot of gung-ho from Torino but the 28-year-old has failed to establish himself and made just eight appearances in the Premier League last time around. He has been linked with Juventus and it remains to be seen where he joins in the future.

It is certain that Mourinho is looking for a backup option to Valencia as the Ecuadorian will be expected to be the first choice starter in the upcoming season. Sastre has been impressive in Spain’s lower divisions but a move to England will definitely be the sternest test of his career. Only time will tell whether he will flourish in the unknown waters of the Premier League.
