Jerome Boateng, the German defender, has been linked with a move back to English Outfit Manchester City. The 29-year-old centre back had spent a season at the Etihad in the 2010-11 season before joining Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich for a meagre fee of €13.5 m and what a bargain that turned out to be. Currently, he is being rated at £50m and it remains to be seen whether Pep Guardiola will go after him in the summer or not.
The Citizens had a great season as they looked heads and shoulders above everyone in the Premier League and didn’t give other rivals a sniff of a chance for the domestic title. They secured a double and it seems like Guardiola’s juggernaut is set to continue next season as well as he is looking to strengthen his squad further.
Boateng has been a mainstay at the back for the Bavarians for past few years. However, he has been injury prone in the last few seasons and a £50m bid for a 29-year-old will certainly be tempting for the German heavyweights. Boateng managed just 19 appearances in the league last season and 31 overall in all competitions. He missed 14 games due to various injuries and was once in doubt for the World Cup. However, he managed to regain his fitness and recover from injury just in time and started for the Germans in their first game in the World Cup against Mexico, which they lost by 1-0.
The defender has also been linked with a move to Manchester City’s biggest rival Manchester United and it seems likely that he will rather end up at the Red side of Manchester instead of Blue.
Pep Guardiola has made some wholesale changes at the back since he took over and even in the January transfer window, he went on to sign Aymeric Laporte for a reported fee of £57.2 m.
Guardiola hasn’t been helped by Vincent Kompany’s absence in the last two seasons and the veteran defender has been unfortunate enough to miss out on a major chunk of the matches as he has been nursing injuries every now and then. Apart from the Belgian, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi are other viable options for the Spaniard.

Guardiola is looking for a squad player and Boateng is highly unlikely to join the side as a squad player. Spending £50m odd for a 29-year-old injury prone defender will be nuts. However, we have seen them spent a lot in the last few transfer windows so one cannot count this move-out as of yet.
