According to latest reports, Manchester City has been linked with a move for Valencia‘s Portuguese defender Joao Cancelo. The defender had spent a season on loan with Serie A outfit Inter Milan and he racked up 29 appearances for them. The reports suggest that the Premier League holders have already tabled a bid for the right back and it is said to be around €45m.
The Citizens went on to secure a domestic double this season as they won the Premier League and Carabao Cup. They secured the domestic league title with a record number of points and they tumbled away a lot of other records as well on their route to the title. Even after such achievements, they are not sitting back in the transfer market and are looking to reinforce their squad further.
Cancelo is traditionally a right back but can play in an advanced position down the right flank. He is known for his excellent pace and that is why we have often seen him start sometimes as a right-winger.
Milan would have been certainly impressed with his performance and they are likely to make a move for him in the summer transfer window. The reports suggest that the Portuguese will like to stay in Italy as he has found his feet in the Serie A but a concrete offer from Citizens can certainly be tough to ignore for the 24-year-old.
Cancelo recently missed the plane to Russia with Portugal as he was not named in the 23 members squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. He will be slightly frustrated with that but he should be keen to prove them wrong next season. It remains to be seen where he will play his football in the upcoming season as his loan spell is set to come to an end. He is contracted with Valencia until 2021 and after a good outing in Italy, they will also be keen on bringing him back to Spain.
Cancelo might be a right back but one expects him to play in an advanced position if Pep Guardiola makes a move for him. He already has the likes of Kyle Walker and Danilo who can play in that right-back role so we very well might see him start as an out and out winger.

Cancelo might be tempted for a move to the blue side of Manchester but he should be wary of the fact that he will have to bide his time on the bench before he gets regular playing opportunities. From City’s point of view, spending £39m odd on a squad player wouldn’t make much sense but we have seen them do that on previous occasions so one cannot count this move out.
