Liverpool are reportedly not any closer to a deal for Lyon star Nabil Fekir than they were this time last week. However, according to reports, the Reds are not willing to give up on their chase for the attacking midfielder and want him at Anfield this summer.
The French playmaker is rated at £60m and considering his talent and the fact that he is only 24 years old, Liverpool may have a sweet deal on their hands. Earlier reports had stated that the player was due at Anfield on Sunday and if contract talks had gone well, he would have completed a medical to practically ensure a move.
However, nothing happened at Merseyside and the reports were clearly not accurate. For now, Liverpool are not expecting any deal to go through this weekend. Fekir had a terrific campaign last season where he scored 23 goals and added 8 assists in 40 games for the French side in the previous campaign and is reportedly being considered as a replacement for Philippe Coutinho, who left Liverpool in January, by Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool may have a battle on their hands with Atletico Madrid of Spain and German giants Bayern Munich also interested in the midfielder. However, a move to Bayern Munich may not be on the cards after the player’s agent Jean-Pierre Bernes reaffirmed on Saturday, “There is no contact with Bayern.”
As for Lyon, the club remains hopeful of persuading the player to stay. Fekir is a Lyon youth academy product and loyalty may prevail on some occasions over ambition and money. However, such hopes will not be high as French reports still suggest that the player remains keen on a move to Anfield.
Coming to Liverpool’s perspective, they would prefer to finish the move before the 2018 edition of the FIFA World Cup kicks off in Russia in a few days’ time. The play-maker is due to turn out for France, where he is not more than a squad player owing to the tough competition in the team. However, should he shine in the tournament, the player’s stock will rise even further and he might be even more expensive for Liverpool to buy.

The Reds have a brilliant starting lineup in attack and midfield but they definitely need more depth in their squad. A versatile player like Fekir, who can fit in both central midfield and on the wings will be a perfect addition to the Reds squad for the upcoming season.
