Leicester City seemed to have won the race for the signature of highly rated Norwich City midfielder James Maddison. According to reports, the move has been finalised and the player will have his medical by the end of this week. The 21-year-old had set the Championship on fire with his performances as he managed 15 goals and 11 assists for Norwich City.
The Canaries had a dismal season as they finished 14th and one expected much better from a side who were in the top flight not too long away. However, things could have been worse if not for Maddison’s breathtaking performances as an attacking midfielder. The 21-year-old was chased by various Premier League clubs and the Foxes have come out on top and Claude Puel seemed extremely keen on having the young dynamic midfielder.
The deal is said to be worth £20m and that can certainly turn out to be a bargain in today’s day and age if the youngster finds his feet in the top division. The English midfielder was made in Coventry City but blossomed at Norwich. He has been with the Canaries since 2016 and had a breakthrough season for them last term.
Maddison is a creative midfielder and is likely to play in the no.10 role for his side. With an able runner like Jamie Vardy up ahead of him, he is sure to have a more lethal season if he gets used to the challenges of top flight. He has a keen eye for defence-splitting pass and has the knack of popping in with some crucial goals for his side. He boasts a powerful shot which makes him a dangerous proposition in and around the penalty box.
The Foxes are set to lose some creative output as Riyad Mahrez is expected to join Manchester City and Maddison will go in some way to provide that spark from midfield after the loss of the Algerian winger. He isn’t the out and out replacement for Mahrez as he is likely to play in a more central role in midfield.
After a season like that, it was pretty evident that the youngster will move on to the Premier League and the Foxes have a great talent at their disposal now. The English u-21 international is touted as a future England regular and he is likely to be a smart signing for the Foxes. He was being chased by some Premier League heavyweights at one point in time so one can understand from that what a big coup this has been for Claude Puel.
