Leeds United faithful would have been dreading to see their young fullback Tom Pearce leave for free in the summer transfer window but the latest news will certainly brighten their day as they have tied down the England u21 left-back for a new deal which will keep him at Elland Road for 4 years. The talks regarding the player’s future was dragging on for quite some time now and finally, it came to a fruitful end from the Whites point of view.
The 20-year-old graduated from Leeds United’s academy after he moved there from the Everton Academy in 2014 and went on to make his senior team debut last season under Paul Heckingbottom. The left-back impressed with his performances and there were some Premier League clubs who were vying for his signature. The management team and the board would have been sweating over the youngster’s contract but now they have pulled off a coup and managed to keep their young talent at Elland Road.
The Whites have a lot of headache at the moment as they are currently managerless but with Pearce signing a new contract, they have one problem less to solve. The youngster made 5 appearances in the Championship last term and even managed to open his goalscoring account as he scored against Barnsley.
Leeds finished 13th in the Championship last season and their good start, which constituted an unbeaten run in the first seven games, came to nothing. They seemed to lack in almost all departments as they failed to inspire at the back or score goals freely. With just 4 wins in 16 games under his belt, Paul Heckingbottom was sacked. However, he should be given due credit for inducting Tom Pearce from u23 squad to the senior team.
Leeds were lacking in the left back department as their January signing Laurens De Bock wasn’t cutting the mustard. Heckingbottom even went on to use Vurnon Anita, a defensive midfielder, in the role of left back and he had to look into his youth team to bring in more strength in that position.
