Although Rangers have returned to the top tier of Scottish football, they have been in the complete shadow of Celtic, the famous rivals who claimed a ‘double treble’ in last two seasons under Brendan Rodgers. The Gers have been humiliated time and again during the Old Firm derbies and failed to stop the Hoops’ Premiership monopoly. But the fans are hoping for a new dawn next season following the appointment of the iconic Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard as their new boss.
Gerrard will be competing Rodgers, his former boss during the final years of his Liverpool realm, in his maiden managerial experience at a senior level and the challenge will be colossal in reclaiming the lost glory at Ibrox.
The Gers have tied down Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield on Bosman deals, made Jamie Murphy’s loan move from Brighton & Hove Albion permanent and also increased their defensive strength by bringing in Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic, but the new Rangers manager is also focusing on other areas to attract talents. Gerrard and Gary McAllister, his former teammate and current No2, had a hush-hush visit to club’s Milngavie training complex last month and eyeing a few changes there as well.
The training facility, recently renamed as Hummel Training Centre, has been labeled old-fashioned and the gaffer wants a complete revamp with all the modern facilities to excite his resources. Also, he wants the kitchen facilities to be changed as well where the players can order diet-specific items over any fixed set of items. Both Gerrard and McAllister are willing to rent houses near the training camp to offer a full-time engagement and get used to the life in Glasgow at the earliest.
Rangers only managed a third-place finish in both of their previous terms and despite a slight improvement exhibited at times, the Light Blues struggled with fitness and consistency throughout the previous campaign. Gerrard has demanded high standards from the players to justify the heritage of this historic football club and is taking care of little things to build up a resilient force at Ibrox. An overhaul in training facilities will help the players to maintain discipline, routine, and fitness which will have a significant impact on their game in due course.
