The 2014 World Cup final hero, Mario Gotze has seen his stock go down in the past four years and he has not been even picked in the 23 member squad which will look to defend their World Cup crown in Russia. Gotze has had a torrid time in the last few years as he has struggled with form and injuries. His development has also been hampered by a metabolic disease which causes fatigue and weight gain, which was one of the major factors why he is struggling with his fitness.
However, he is looking to revive his career and wants to move to England. He had a below par season with Borussia Dortmund as the attacking midfielder managed 2 goals and 4 assists in the Bundesliga. He hasn’t had a fairytale return to his former club after a failed move to Bayern Munich and clubs from England are now vying for his signature.
Gotze is being rated at £18m and Everton are one of the clubs who are in the mix to sign this fallen star. The German should be in his prime at the moment at 26 but one feels that he will need some time to adjust to English Premier League before he starts firing.
The Toffees have gone on to appoint Marco Silva as their new manager and the Portuguese tactician will be expected to play an attacking and attractive brand of football and for that, he will need to bring in reinforcements in the summer to improve his squad. Gotze is a versatile attacking player as he can play in the no 10 role or down the left wing or as a central midfielder. For Germany, Joachim Loew has even used him as a false 9 and it will be interesting to see what role he will play if Marco Silva gets him at Goodison Park.
However, the Merseyside club should be aware of his recent history and fitness related issues and £18m is not a less amount of money for a player who is currently on his decline. But that hasn’t deterred the Premier League outfits as there are quite a few clubs who are after him. Gotze is still relatively young and can go on to prove himself in the second innings of his career.

By signing him, Toffees will have a World Cup winner in their squad and the mentality of a player of that calibre will certainly rub onto other players in the group. He has the experience of playing on big occasions and wouldn’t be overawed with his move to England. If he continues to work hard he might very well get back to his best and suddenly that £18m might just look like a bargain for him.
