£182.88m. The combined total of exactly how much Farhad Moshiri spent at Everton last season. The ambitious owner bought the club hoping to make them one of the heavyweights of Europe. He spent a huge sum of money and left no expenses uncovered hoping to put Everton amongst the big boys of Europe.
His money included some exciting new signings like that of Gylfi Sigurdsson and some romantic decisions like Wayne Rooney’s return to Merseyside. A stunning 22 players moved to Everton in order to overhaul and reinstate the squad and the Toffees were expected to make the most of their big signings.
However, things failed spectacularly as the Toffees were knocked out of the Europa League group stages and were threatened by relegation in the early weeks of their Premier League campaign. Ronald Koeman lost his job and was replaced by Sam Allardyce who was expected to stabilize the situation at Merseyside.
That is exactly what Big Sam did as he guided the Toffees to a top half finish and it seems now that Everton are looking to have a fresh go having appointed Marco Silva as their new head coach. The former Watford boss has risen through the ranks significantly and has produced an entertaining brand of football at every club he has managed so far.
With Silva now in charge of the Toffees, here are a few things the former Hull City manager should try and do at Everton.
Reduce the squad size
For any team to develop, there has to be cohesion and team chemistry. Bringing in 22 new players in one season is bound to disrupt the harmony and make it difficult for the new recruits to play as a team. Silva must look to form his core team quickly and move on the players he will not need instead of keeping. This will also allow him to focus more on the players who can actually improve the team.
Stop the signing for the sake of a signing
Just because they have funds available does not mean they should go around shopping players randomly. Strategically signed players who fit the personality of the team that Silva wants to build is the need of the hour instead of signing star players or young prodigies with great talent.

Buy himself time
It can be expected that should Silva’s tenure take a hard turn, Everton might bring down the axe. However, it is up to the manager to convince the board of his methods and the project he would want to implement in the long-term. Short-term results are going to be hard to come by in such a competitive league and Silva should instead focus on building a base for a team who can actually challenge for the league in the coming years.
