Rangers target John McGinn is now being eyed by Championship outfit Derby County. The Rams recently appointed a relatively inexperienced manager in Frank Lampard and the former England midfielder is hoping to persuade McGinn to come to the English Championship. This will come as a body blow to the Gers as they have been linked with the Hibernian FC midfielder for quite some time now.
There has been a lot of ups and down over the past month regarding the move of the player. Hibs Chief Executive, Leeann Dempster had said, “We don’t live and die by transfer fees. If we were to receive a transfer fee for a player of some significance, of course, that would be welcome.”
Such comments indicated that the club will be willing to sell the player and the Teddy Bears were considered as a prime contender to sign him. However, with the new entrant coming into the picture, they are slightly going to fall down the pecking order. Even their old farm derby rivals Celtic have been linked with McGinn and the coming months will certainly be interesting to see where the future of the Scottish midfielder lies.
The midfielder had a terrific season with the Hibs as they finished fourth and he was a constant feature for the Easter Road outfit in the middle of the park. The central midfielder made 43 appearances in all competitions and scored 6 goals and provided 8 assists.
There is set to be a three-way battle for the player and it seems like the Gers are going to be lowest in the pecking order. The club has already made some smart and decent acquisitions in the transfer market and the signing of McGinn will probably set them back the furthest in terms of money. Hibs finished just three points behind Gers and the gap between the two seems to be closing. From the player’s point of view, McGinn will like to move to a club who are much higher in the pecking order than the Teddy Bears and a move to Derby County or Celtic might be more fitting for the 23-year-old Scotsman.

Gers seem to be waging a losing battle and it is probably time for them to look at other options. They have secured the likes of Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria (on loan) who can play in the central midfield role, so one doesn’t expect the Gers to go too hard at their target.
