Brighton & Hove Albion have signed Jason Steele from Sunderland on a three-year contract. The club has confirmed on their official website that the English shot-stopper has joined Chris Hughton’s revolution at the Amex Stadium in what will be a three-year deal that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2021.
He has become the Seagulls’ third signing of the summer and will add more depth to Hughton’s squad ahead of the new season. Steele had an impressive campaign last term and has put in a number of outstanding in goal for the Black Cats which has caught the eyes of Brighton chiefs. The English goalie had featured in 18 matches for Sunderland last season while making 15 matches in the Skybet Championship.
In a recent interview following the capture of Steele, Brighton boss Chris Hughton expressed his delight and was quoted to have said, “We’re delighted to secure the services of Jason – a goalkeeper that brings a wealth of experience, having played almost 300 games at senior level.
“Mat Ryan performed exceptionally well for us in the Premier League last season and Jason’s arrival will, following Niki Maenpaa’s departure, restore the options we have in this position.
“Jason will work with Ben Roberts and our other goalkeepers, and I’m looking forward to welcoming him to the squad when we return for pre-season training.”
The Durham-born talent will definitely bolster Hughton’s goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign. The Seagulls have the likes of Mathew Ryan, Tim Krul and now, Jason Steele vying for a starting berth in the Brighton first-team. The arrival of Steele will undoubtedly improve Hughton’s team and add more competition for places within the Seagulls squad.
The 27-year-old has represented the English national team at various youth levels and was also part of the Great Britain squad at the 2012 Olympics held in London. He is highly experienced and could be a worthy under-study for Mathew Ryan as Brighton look to ensure their top-flight lives once again next season. At 27, the English goalie has his peak years ahead of him which the Seagulls will look to utilise in the coming years. The English goalie will hope that he can take his game to the next level under the stewardship of Chris Hughton.
It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Steele and whether his time at the Amex Stadium turns out to be a success.
