Barcelona have been dealt a body blow as their Bayern Munich target David Alaba has recently said in an interview he will continue playing in Germany. According to reports, he had earlier gone on to say,” I always dream big, I see myself playing in one of the great clubs of the world in the next five years. Big clubs like Manchester United and Barcelona excite me.” On the back of such comments, Barcelona were considered as favourites to sign him but it seems like he is going to stay at Allianz Arena for now.
He recently said,”I’ll stay at Bayern. I feel very comfortable in Munich, so there’s nothing more to say about it.” Those recent comments will surely dash all hopes which the Blaugrana were having to sign the left back. Alaba has been an important player for Bayern Munich in the past few years and this season he made 36 appearances in all competitions and was on the scoresheet twice.
Alaba who is traditionally a left back has been used in various positions throughout his career. He has played in midfield as a defensive midfielder and is considered to be extremely good on the ball. He has a vicious left foot and that is one of the reasons why he has played often in more central roles.
His versatility makes him a great asset and that was one of the reasons why Barcelona were interested in him. It could have very well happened that he would have played in the midfield as his ball playing abilities and distribution skills are top notch. The Austrian international will be relatively fresh for the upcoming season as his national side Austria failed to qualify for the World Cup and he should be well prepared for the upcoming season.
Alaba has his contract at Bayern Munich up until 2021 and it is highly likely now he will stay there for another year. Barcelona will probably have to look somewhere else to bring stability to their defence and midfield and it remains to be seen who they will target in the forthcoming future.

It was highly unlikely that he would have been deployed in the centre back option as the likes of Samuel Umtiti and Gerard Pique are currently nailed on starters currently. The Catalonians will certainly not get someone as versatile as Alaba as the Austrian has all the facets to be a Barcelona player and this snub could be a huge loss for them.
