According to latest reports in Spanish media, Barcelona have received an offer for their out of favour midfielder Andre Gomes. But it is yet not clear who has made the initial bid for him. It could very well be from English outfit Tottenham Hotspur who are considered as favourites to sign him.
Spurs have shown a keen interest in the Portuguese midfielder and it remains to be seen whether they are going to get their man. The 24 year old moved to the current La Liga holders from Valencia for a fee that could rise to £46m according to some reports.
However, the Portuguese international has failed to establish himself in the Barcelona lineup and is being linked with a move away from the club. Italian giants Juventus were also said to be interested in him and they have been after the 24 year old for some time now but nothing has materialised for them.
He made 31 appearances for Barcelona last season but most of them came from the bench. The midfielder didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet and provided just one assist last season. His performances have left the Blaugrana faithful frustrated as he was signed with a lot of excitement and he was expected to be the backbone of their midfield for years to come. But even in the fag end of Andres Iniesta’s career, Ernesto Valverde preferred him over the 24-year-old.
Mauricio Pochettino will be in need of a central midfielder after Mousa Dembele’s move to China looks imminent now. The Belgian was an important player for them over the years and the Argentine tactician will be in need of some solid replacement for him.
The European Cup winner has not been included in the Portuguese squad that has travelled to Russia, which is evident of the kind of season he had with the Catalan giants last time around.

It remains to be seen whether Barcelona will stick with him for another year as he has failed to establish himself at Camp Nou. A move to the Premier League could be an even sterner test for Gomes but the pressure to perform will certainly not be as high as it was with the Blaugrana. Maybe Pochettino will be able to bring out the best in him and it remains to be seen whether he will be a success story at the North London club if they manage to get his signature.
