Arsenal are lining up a move for Getafe defender Djene Dakonam this summer. According to recent reports, the Gunners are planning to seal a move for the La Liga ace during this ongoing transfer period. It is understood that the new Arsenal boss Unai Emery is eager to strengthen his squad so that the North Londoners are well-equipped to challenge on all fronts next season.
The 26-year-old signed for Getafe from Sint-Truiden last summer and had an outstanding campaign at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. He has put in a number of commanding displays for the Spanish side during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed by other clubs.
Some sources are now claiming that the Togolese international has a €35m release clause in his current deal with Getafe which is set to run out in the summer of 2023. Hence, José Bordalás’ side will be under no pressure to sell unless the Gunners are willing to match his release clause.
Djene had made 36 appearances for Getafe last season and has one goal to his name in all competitions. He has also earned 32 international caps for the Togolese national team during his playing career so far.
The North London giants had an underwhelming campaign after managing to obtain a 6th placed finish in the league last season. Emery’s team are in need of an injection of quality in this transfer window so that they can compete for a Champions League spot in the upcoming season.
The addition of Djene will undoubtedly bolster their defensive options at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal have a whole host of defensive enforcers such as Laurent Koscielny, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Shkodran Mustafi and Calum Chambers competing for a starting berth in Emery’s first XI. The potential acquisition of Djene will add more competition for places within the Gunners squad and improve their team a lot next term.

At 26, the Togolese defender still has his peak years ahead of him which the North London side could look to utilise over the next few years. The Getafe defender is also quite versatile and primarily plays as a centre-back but can also be deployed as a right-back which makes him an ideal fit for Emery’s Arsenal. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Djene and whether he ends up playing for the Gunners next season.
